Andong-based education...
With growth around the area developing a rate far greater than any infrastructure projects, Andong's children struggle to access quality education.
It is our belief that education is the key to eradicating poverty and early literacy gives children the best chance at a lifetime of learning. That's why we work closely with the local schools and government bodies to improve the public offering, and we supplement it with pre-school, after school and weekend classes.

We employ four full time teachers who work under the supervision of our Community Development Officer to deliver engaging early literacy programs in the hub of the Andong Community. We teach just under 200 children, 6 days a week, and provide extra nutrition, monthly life skills sessions and access to our Community Library.
Prior to building ten new classrooms at Kork Rokar - the local primary school - there were 60 children in each classroom. Even with the new building, given the rate of expansion in the area, there are almost 50 children per classroom. We also host children events monthly to teach life-skills and encourage community spirit from an early age. |

In February 2017, we were planting a garden in the grounds of Kork Rokar Primary School with eight international volunteers and 200 students. It just happened to be the same day that the Honorable Hang Chuon Naron - Minister of Education, Youth and Sports - was visiting the Daycare Centre across the road. He noticed the commotion we were creating and came to check it out. Following years of government lobbying, this was the lucky break we needed.
In January 2022, we opened ten new classrooms which will service the needs of up to 600 children. This is a huge opportunity for children in Andong and a huge milestone for us!

Why it's so important...
With classrooms on the other side of the school at maximum capacity and without new spaces, Kork Rokar could not teach all of the children in the area. Classes often contained up to 60 children and as a result, their ability to learn and develop a love of learning was significantly diminished, further disadvantaging them from their city-based peers.
While we supplement local education, our goal has always been to increase capacity at Kork Rokar and support governmental teaching staff to improve the quality of education in and around Andong. We want to make education more accessible to people of all ages and hope that the new building will also become a key community base in the future.
We're proud of the hard work our teachers and volunteers put in to make this a reality.
