the most sustainable way to eradicate poverty.

Supplementing local schools...

There are over 1000 children of school age in Andong currently not attending school. Our goal is to reduce this year-on-year.

We employ four full time teachers who work under the supervision of our Community Development Officer to deliver engaging early literacy programs in the hub of the Andong Community. We teach 165 children, 6 days a week, and provide extra nutrition, monthly life skills sessions and access to our Community Library.

In addition, we work with Kork Rokar Primary School, running a ‘school bus’ service to get young children to school, delivering professional development sessions for teachers, and providing funding for learning resources.

Building 10 new classrooms at Kork Rokar

Picture
In February 2017, we were planting a garden in the grounds of Kork Rokar Primary School with eight international volunteers and 200 students. It just happened to be the same day that the Honorable Hang Chuon Naron - Minister of Education, Youth and Sports - was visiting the Daycare Centre across the road. He noticed the commotion we were creating and came to check it out. Following years of government lobbying, this was the lucky break we needed. Since then, the plans we have made to improve education at Kork Rokar through the development of new classes has been fast tracked and we're pleased to be half way down the list for government-funded school builds in 2018.
Why it's so important...

Today, a derelict building stands where the new foundations will be built. The existing building is unsafe and unusable, wasting precious land that would be better used for quality education initiatives.

With classrooms on the other side of the school at maximum capacity and without new spaces, Kork Rokar can not teach all of the children in the area. Currently, classes contain 60 children to every teacher. As a result, childrens' ability to learn and develop a love of learning is significantly diminished, further disadvantaging them from their city-based peers.

Our goal is to increase capacity at Kork Rokar and support teaching staff to improve the quality of education in and around Andong. We want to make education more accessible to people of all ages and hope that the new building will also become a key community base in the future.

Until the build is complete, we continue to rent spaces in the village to ensure that every child in Andong has access to education. We're proud of the hard work our teachers and volunteers put in to make this a reality.
